My name is Tom Rucco and for 32 years I have owned and operated an extremely successful lawn mowing business. It's not a huge company, but a very profitable small business located in a small town in the Southeast. I don't consider myself rich but my mowing business affords me a very comfortable lifestyle. For instance, I make way over $100k; I built a beautiful 2,900 square foot brick home in a high-end neighborhood and have a brand new BMW in my garage. I put two kids through college and I've traveled all over the country. I've been to the Caribbean multiple times and have traveled to Europe. In my spare time I hunt, fish and golf. I have very little debt. I'm living the lifestyle I had always dreamed of.

MY STORY

I love my mowing business—it's like a child to me. And I love the people in this business. I feel like we are a unique breed who crave the outdoors and the smell of fresh cut grass. We love sunshine and sweat and making yards look great. For us, there's nothing better than looking back at a yard we just beautifully mowed and proudly saying, "I did that!" Or, when a customer comes home and is so blown away with her yard that she calls to congratulate us on a job well done.

What a great feeling it is to be your own boss, making your own decisions and having charge of your own destiny. It's totally satisfying to create something real and do something fun with your life, where you're the one calling the shots and working towards the lifestyle you've always dreamed of. 

But, there's a flip side.

 

That great feeling of working outside and being own boss can quickly turn into a very sick feeling when you realize at the end of the month you have very little to show for your blood, sweat and tears. You're still broke. You can't pay your bills. Your wife's car needs a transmission but you don't have the money and you're like, "Will I ever get my head above water? Will I ever be able to buy a house instead of throwing money away on rent? Will I ever get that truck I've always wanted, or be able to take my family on a real vacation?" At some point reality will kick you right in the face. At some point you'll break. I know. It happened to me.

The thing is, I made all the mistakes which set me back years. I became a slave to my mowing business and it nearly worked me to death! If only I had done what you are doing right now—seeking advice from someone who is where you want to be—no telling how far I would've gotten before reaching retirement. But no, I was hard-headed and set on figuring things out on my own. Honestly, I was too proud to ask for help.

I started my mowing business from ground zero. I had very little money, no professional mowing skills and virtually no business knowledge. All I really had was a burning desire to be my own boss. So, I started picking up a few yards here and there and for a while I thought things were going pretty well. I was having fun. But, at the end of the month, I was just as broke as when I got started. I was working my butt off and just wasn't getting anywhere and didn't know why. I couldn't understand why I wasn't making any money. My business just seemed to stall. After a while it became very depressing. I was tired. I was down. I just wanted to quit. 

 

But thankfully, my super supportive wife kept encouraging me. So one day she said, "I know you have the drive to make your business a success—maybe you should educate yourself so you know what steps you need to take."

 

DING! DING! DING! That bell rang louder than my backpack blower!

 

It was at that moment I got really honest with myself and admitted that I did not know how to do a lot of really important things... things like:

  • How to get a lot more customers. Where do I find them? Do I knock on doors? Do I buy expensive ads?

  • How much I should charge to mow a yard. Do I just charge what the others charge? Or lower?

  • How to make my yards look better than the competition. Mine were pretty good but far from the best.

  • How to get good customers and avoid the bad ones. How can I know the difference ahead of time?

  • How to get paid on time every time. It was frustrating chasing my money. I was always getting stiffed. 

  • How to maximize my time and my profits. I was working a lot for only a little and never getting ahead.

  • How to work smarter not harder. I had no real plan for success. I was confused and discouraged.

  • How to make really great money in the mowing business. I was clueless! 

 

I realized I had just been winging it since I got started... figuring things would just work themselves out. 

 

BIG MISTAKE!

 

But that day, that very moment, was the turning point for me. I realized I had two choices:

  1. Quit my business, give up my dream, and go back to working a dead-end job for someone else; or

  2. Truly dedicate myself to LEARNING how to turn my mowing business into a money making machine and improve my quality of life.

 

Fortunately for me and my family, I chose door #2. But I still had big problems. How was I going to do it? Was it even possible???

 

Keep in mind we're talking the early 90s. There was no Internet to look for help and I didn't know anyone to reach out to. How was I going to pull this off? All I knew was: I can't let down my wife—she believes in me. And I can't let down my little kids—they depend on me and think dad is Superman. I had nothing to fall back on. I had to make it work because the thought of getting another lousy, unfulfilling job was too much to take. I couldn't let down my family. I couldn't let down myself. Remember that foolish pride that kept me from seeking help? I finally wised up!

So that very day I made a commitment to my wife and to myself: I'll do whatever it takes to make my mowing business work for me—NOT me work for it. I no longer want to be a slave to my business, instead I want my business to be a slave to me. So, starting that day, my #1 priority was to make my mowing business a real business that would provide me the income that I started my business for in the first place. I mean, isn't that our dream when we start our mowing business—to achieve my dreams instead of helping my boss achieve his dreams? I knew I had to learn how to make that happen.

So, I started my intensive learning process by studying how to be the best mowing guy around. I started closely watching the more experienced mowing crews and studied how they made their yards look better than mine. I asked them a lot of questions; I tried out new things I thought might work better. I tested many new techniques, constantly working towards making my yards look better and doing it more efficiently. I wanted to learn to be the best—to be a pro!

 

I began reading books on horticulture and turf management; I got my pesticide license; I read books on business and marketing and subscribed to all the trade magazines. I studied everything. It literally consumed my life! I tried and tested everything. But, it was hit-and-miss. Some things worked, some things didn't. Other things worked ok, others things worked really well. It was lots and lots and lots of testing and trial & error and making mistakes. It was exhausting!

 

But, along the way, I started making some really awesome discoveries which led me to some major eye-opening GAME CHANGERS. I mean some SERIOUS GAME CHANGERS! Things I learned to do that supercharged my mowing business and made all the difference in terms of high profits. Things that if I didn't do, I wouldn't be here sharing my success story with you right now. My business was starting to take off!

 

So I kept at it. I kept working to improve my business; kept learning and discovering more and more GAME CHANGERS in the yards and in the office—until it started paying off. And then, FINALLY, I made a profit of $102,244 in a single year! I really couldn't believe it!!! My wife was diggin' it too. :) By continuing to EDUCATE myself and improve by business, my profits kept increasing each year and I started living the life I always wanted, and my business just kept making more money!

 

You see, during this educational process, I finally discovered the KEY to a successful mowing business—KNOWLEDGE. Now my business was no longer driving me—I was driving it!

I'm 64 years old, and when you get to my age and level of success, it becomes especially gratifying to help others achieve their dreams like you have.
